TOPIC: Financial Oversight or Financial Overlooking?
Year-end fundraising season is heating up, and the fiscal year is well underway. It is tempting, to hope for the best, stand back and stay positive.
How well do we, as nonprofit leaders, carry out the essential governance function of financial oversight, especially when our organizations have set ambitious goals?
How do we balance fiscal prudence to protect our organizations' long-term health with the risk-taking that can be necessary to achieve our goals?
How confident are you, as a Board Chair/Leader, in your own financial oversight capability?
Our discussion will consider financial oversight as it is reflected in governance documents, approved policies, and documented (but not formally approved) procedures, and in what actually happens on the ground.

Provide a policy or procedure related to your Board's financial oversight function. Include a question or observation about how your Board, or you as Board Chair, carries out that function (e.g. "Here is our approved Audit Committee description. I am struck by how much responsibility the Board delegates to this committee. Is the full Board sufficiently engaged in what to me is one of our most important roles?") The purpose of the conversation is to learn from one another, so we ask for candor. Please email your materials by Thursday, November 14 to karen@topakian.com. In advance of our meeting we will send the compiled documents to all attendees. As always, the documents and discussions will be kept confidential.
