Description

Being Mortal: Frontline Film & Discussion, with Patrick Arbore, EdD

Event Details

Institute on Aging and Reimagine End of Life welcome you to a viewing of and lecture/discussion regarding the PBS Frontline film, Being Mortal, which explores terminal illness & final choices, based on the bestselling book by Dr. Atul Gawande.

First, we'll view Being Mortal, a PBS Frontline film, featuring Dr. Atul Gawande, physician and writer, as he presents several families grappling with serious illness and end-of-life choices. Like Dr. Gawande's best-selling book, on which the film is based, Being Mortal explores the relationships between doctors and patients nearing the end of life, and shows how many doctors, including Dr. Gawande himself, struggle to talk honestly and openly.

After the film, we'll engage in an interactive discussion, facilitated by Dr. Patrick Arbore, Founder of The Friendship Line and Director of the Center for Elderly Suicide Prevention and Grief Related Services (CESP)---both programs at Institute on Aging. Dr. Arbore conducts workshops and presents lectures, locally and nationally, on grief, end-of-life and aging-related subjects.

Previous showings of this film through IOA have sparked deep thought and dialogue about "what matters most," and this event is sure to prompt the same. Join us, and be a part of a growing, national conversation.

Patrick Arbore, EdD, in addition to his credentials listed above, is the author of numerous articles and book chapters on suicide prevention, bereavement, and suffering, including a chapter he co-authored entitled “Suffering and the Caring Professional” in When Professionals Weep: Emotional and Countertransference Responses in End-of-Life Care, 2nd Edition (2016), and “Suicide Prevention Among Rural Older Adults” in Generations: Journal of the American Society on Aging, Summer 2019, 43(2), p 62-65. Dr. Arbore is a 2014 Jefferson-Award winner, as well as a 2016 Norma Satten Community Service Innovation Award recipient.

Date: Monday evening, October 28, 2019, 6:00-8:00 p.m. Doors will open at 5:15 p.m.. The 2-hour film and workshop program will begin on time, so please be prompt.
