Description
“The best of a new breed of African poet-chanteuse, and the most beguiling talent to hit the world music scene in some time”
Event Details
(The Telegraph), young vocalist and guitarist Fatoumata Diawara shares this special double bill with “The rightful heir to the Buena Vista Social Club legacy” (Time Out NY), pianist and composer Roberto Fonseca.
Raised with the Wassoulou song style considered one of the main ancestors of American blues, Diawara mixes deeply-felt African traditions with high-energy doses of funk. Appearances on Dee Dee Bridgewater’s Red Earth and Malian superstar Oumou Sangaré’s GRAMMY-nominated Seya started Diawara’s rapid ascent as one of the brightest lights in African music. She lent her clarion voice to Herbie Hancock’s GRAMMY-winning Imagine Project and Blur front man Damon Albarn’s Africa Express, and appeared in Abderrahmane Sisako’s Oscar-nominated 2014 film Timbuktu.
“A charismatic spark plug of a pianist from Cuba” (NY Times), Fonseca made his debut at the Havana International Jazz Festival at age 15. A decade and several solo albums later, he joined the globe-trotting orchestra of Ibrahim Ferrer, the late, great sonero from the celebrated Buena Vista Social Club, and later contributed his peerless abilities to work with fellow Buena Vista member Omara Portuondo. Fonseca recently released ABUC, his Impulse! debut that traces Cuban jazz history with an omnivorous slant, utilizing genres and influences from electronic dance music to big band with guests including Trombone Shorty and Eliades Ochoa.
